Looks like the 2008 C30 from Volvo will offer more to entice young consumers than just an impressive sound system, a hatchback with room for Ikea packages and a wonderfully quirky Web site.

Volvo announced Monday that an "Efficiency" version of the 2008 C30 with a 1.6-liter turbo diesel engine will get about 4.5 liters/100 km (52 mpg).

Additionally, Volvo said that its Volvo C30, S40 and V50 with the 2-liter turbo diesel engine will have a new "Powershift" gearbox that will reduce overall fuel consumption by about 8 percent.

The Volvo C30 was originally announced at the 2006 Paris Auto Show and is anticipated to be a rival for young consumers against Audi's A3 and BMW's Mini, Mini Cooper Clubman and 1-series models.

Modern ultra-low sulfer diesel allows the car manufacturers to put modern anti-pollution devices onto the car. You won't get ULEV certification yet, but it's still only 10% more carbon per gallon than gasoline.
you live in the 80's

Modern diesel engines with modern diesel fuel (which should be available in the US this or next year afaik) are nowhere near the 80s smoking diesel engines. Please get your facts straight before bashing something.

As you walk around the Volvo C30 starting first at the drivers door
working your way around the front, down the passenger side you're
totally in awe... Until you stand directly behind one...
YUUUCKKKK...!!!! *** were the designers thinking..?!?! That's
exactly how I saw the C30 for the first time on display in a Mall. I'm
thinking, yes, I want this car... (till I got to the rear) OUT OF MY
SIGHT...!!!!

Volvo's commitment to bring clean diesel technology to the USA is fantastic. I learned to drive on a 1984 Volkswagen Diesel Jetta. It got great mileage and you couldn't kill it. However, you also got outrun by everything on wheels. The new diesels are clean, fast and quiet. Diesels are a genuine alternative to current hybrid technology due to their efficiency. Now all we need is plug-in hybrid diesels and we'll actually make a dent in our oil addiction.

The C30 isn't for people with kids. It's a different kind of a Volvo for a different kind of customer." In other words, the C30 isn't meant to be an A-to-B appliance for the Smiths or Joneses, but rather a Gen-Y plaything for Junior. More info onVolkswagen Blog...
