Correction: Google balances privacy, reach

The original article incorrectly implied that Google Desktop Search can track what's stored on a user's PC. With Google Desktop Search, the user's computer content "is not made accessible to Google or anyone else without the user's explicit permission." By default, the service collects a limited amount of non-personal information from the computer, such as summaries of the number of searches you do, and sends it to Google, but allows the user to opt out of sending the data at any time.

This report mischaracterized the origin of changes in AntiSpyware in relation to quarantining products from Claria. Security researchers discovered earlier this month that Redmond had changed related classifications. Users now receive messages to ignore the products.
